Had the same trouble. It seems that the ID line needs to be at 7.5v. I simply disconnected it at the power supply end and soldered a 47k resistor between the 19.5 line and the id line. Apparently there is a pull down at the computer end that that means it ends up at 7.5v. Have been using this on my zd8000 for months.
Please note that after the battery failed I just run the laptop without the battery. From the blogs this is the wise thing top do with zd8000s as the heat and lack of thermal access causes the mother board to heat and cooks the graphics chip. Thank goodness my battery failed before it cooked the chip. The x600 chip seems especially susceptible.

Just look on ebay at the number of zd8000s with a graphics problem. My advice with the zd8000 would be to run it without the battery even if the battery is OK. This removes the heat generated by the battery AND leaves a nice space under the machine that allows the heat to escape from the motherboard - more specifically the graphics chip.

Nishant: Yes, that is a limitation of the idea; it doesn't update more than every time the VM thinks is a minute. (Even if it updated every "real" minute, it would still be off by some seconds at the end of the minute, and this can confuse makefiles and such on shared filesystems.) For what I need, this limitation is more a matter of "isn't as good as it could be" than "doesn't work", though.

hakre: Thanks for the comment; I'm glad to hear that it's useful for you!

I like the approach. Each time my windows host system is back from hybernation, the debian vmware boxes were out of sync with their software time.

I once used a timeserver / ntp to sync the clock again but after reading your post I much more like this version.

i have an HP Pavilion that's 3 years old. A friend cracked the case and looked at the motherboard and it is fine. problem is there is a metal casing over the battery connection port that he could not open. is there an option for this kind of problem. that is where the connection is loose. the motherboard does not show any burn marks and is not loose anywhere. how do you crack that metal casing around the port for the external battery pack/AC connection?

I had this problem with my Presario 2100. Got the thing apart just fine. Only while soldering the jack back in one of the prongs bent. When I was trying to desolder the other prongs back out my friend bumped into me. I accidently pulled the jack out, along with what looked like a little copper sleeve looking thing, soldered to the jack. I have since lost the jack, but I have another jack that fits. Will it still work, or is the mobo "screwed" ? I don't know what to do now. Please help.

Hello, I bought a new battery AC/DC Charger Universal. It work this morning and came on. I left the labtop plug up will not recharge however the charge light boat did come on when I tried to turn it on. I will try a buy a new power cord and adapter to see how my labtop would work.
